On Oriole Park
The modern-day stadium era began on April 6th, 1992, where the Baltimore Orioles played the Cleveland Indians at Oriole Park. Oriole Park was the first of a new generation to have straight-edged walls. The construction of the stadium was originally designed to be for both the Baltimore Colts and the Baltimore Orioles. Once the city had the funding for the new venture, the Colts left for Indianapolis. This left the new stadium project to be designed solely for the Orioles. The original design was an “ashtray” (circular stadium) similar to stadiums such as Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.
Oriole Park or Camden Yards seats about 45,000 people. The most significant change was moving the left field wall back nearly 50 feet. Some people would argue that this gives the pitcher an unfair advantage. However, the left field foul pole still remains at 333 feet. So, it is possible to hit a homerun approximately 333 feet to left field.

Oriole Park was the first stadium that helped eliminate the cookie cutter stadium design. It incentivized other teams to advocate for building baseball stadiums with unique dimensions specifically for baseball. There are many things that make the stadium unique. The electronic scoreboard out in right field tells the scores of other games happening during the Orioles games. Utah Street is the most unique feature in all of baseball, as the warehouse serves as a back drop to the stadium. Oriole Park at Camden Yards is everything a baseball stadium should be.
