Why Alex Ovechkin will have another 50 goal season
Alex Ovechkin has nine 50-goal seasons. Most players would be happy with a 30-goal season. Ovechkin has achieved this milestone, which only a few other players have. Even though he may be pushing 37 years of age, Ovechkin has been consistent and able to skate as well as when he first entered the league.
Being the captain of the Washington Capitals and having the most experience with the team, he knows how the team’s chemistry works. Ovechkin can play all 82 games and has averaged 4.76 times per game in his career. That’s nearly five shots per game. Ovechkin has a career average shooting percentage of 12.9 percent.
So let’s do the math. 82 multiplied by 4.76 is 390.32 shots per year. Now, if Alex Ovechkin gets a goal, 12.9 percent on average from the shots he takes, that would come out to 390.32 * .129 which is equal to 50.35 goals.
There can be many fluctuations to this. Ovechkin could get more shots or have a higher shooting percentage. last year Ovechkin had a 15% shooting accuracy. If 15% of Ovechkin took a shot, he would score. So if we used round numbers, 390 shots per year multiplied by a 15% shooting equals 58.5 goals per year.
Many skeptics would say Ovechkin doesn’t have another 50-goal season left in him. I have to disagree. There has been no significant decline in his performance, and he is still in incredible shape. If Ovechkin shows up for every day and practices every day next year, I see no reason why he would not be able to score 50 goals next year.
